Art Journal Cover – Magenta DT Post

I love to decorate the covers of my art journals.

Magenta Journal Cover

I used masking tape to protect the edges of my journal cover and create a crisp frame. First, I painted a coat of gesso and then applied acrylic paint in light blue and green. Before the paint dried I used a baby wipe to remove paint through the Wavy Texture stencil. Much of this gets covered up with more layers, but does create texture in the final result.

I then stamped the Swirls Background stamp in several areas.

I added several more layers of different colors of paint through both of the Bubble Path Duo stencils with a sponge.

M5

I used the Alpha stencil from the Alpha and Number Duo Stencil set to create the title. I masked off individual letters, one at a time, and used a brush to add paint through the stencil.

M6

When the paint was thoroughly dry, I stamped the Hearts Flowers image. I painted the inner portion of the hearts, leaves and stems with gesso, then acrylic paint.

M7

I used a permanent marker to outline the image. I carefully removed the tape and sealed the cover with a spray fixative.

I love having the outside of my journals reflect the joy I get from creating in them.

Color My World – Magenta DT Post

I love using bright, happy colors in my art journal, especially during the warmer days of Spring and Summer.

Magenta Post 6-16-18

I placed the mask of the Round Shape Stencil on the page to protect the area from getting color on that portion. I sprinkled Nuance powder onto an acrylic block and “smooshed” it onto the page, first with Cerulean Blue, then with Purple and allowed it to dry thoroughly.

I removed the mask and painted the circle shape. First with Bright Yellow, then adding Golden Yellow to the left edge, lifting the journal to let it drip towards the center of the circle.

Once dry, I stamped the Wild Rose image with Jet Black Archival Ink. I applied bleach with a small brush to the stamped area to remove the color. When the bleach had whitened the area, I applied water to those areas and blotted with a paper towel to remove the bleach from the page. I then used Nuance powders as watercolors to paint the flower and leaves.

After drying thoroughly, I used a fine tip Micron pen to retrace the lines in the stamped image, as some had faded during the bleaching process.

I stamped the Bee and “See the World…” sentiment and added some sketchy lines around the circle and as a border on the page.

Sail Away – Magenta DT Post

I love the versatility of Nuance powders. I decided to try them on Yupo paper and was thrilled with the “magical” result.

20180501_132635 (3)

I made puddles of color on my palette with Nuance and plenty of water, then dipped my brush in one of the colors at a time and added it to the Yupo.  I tipped the paper and allowed the colors to flow and swirl around the page. I added more color as needed with the brush, just touching the tip of the brush to the page and letting the circles of color expand or dragging them around the page. Once it had dried thoroughly, I used Cobalt Archival Ink for the There is Magic sentiment and Compass Rose stamps and to sponge color through the Sail Boat stencil. I applied white paint through the Stars stencil with a sponge.

I hope you try this technique and have as much fun as I did.

I Love Stencils – Magenta DT Post

Stencils are my favorite tool for creating mixed media. They are so versatile and Magenta has such a wonderful variety.

I Love Stencils

I created these pages in my handmade mini art journal using a variety of stencils, masks and acrylic paint colors. I added some detail with a white gel pen to complete the pages.

Here are a couple of detail photos:

Moon Glow – Magenta DT Post

Cat 5

Just a cat sitting in the moonlight as the last rays of the sun sink into the horizon.  Makes me wonder what she’s contemplating.

I started this whimsical journal page by placing masking tape on the edges of the page.  I punched a 2″ circle in a piece of cardstock and used it to protect the page as I created the moon by sponging chalk acrylic paint through the hole.

I then used the circle I punched out as a mask while I added the paint to the sky.

I used the Waves stencil to create the sun’s rays.

I replaced the circle stencil I created over the moon and used the Galaxy Cluster stamp with grey ink to create some texture, then added some gesso to create a softer glow and darkened the outline with black marker.  I then stamped the Japanese Maple Branch and Willow Branch around the page.  I sponged black acrylic paint through the Cat stencil and created shadows with a black watercolor pencil.  I removed the masking tape and darkened the border with a permanent black marker, using a ruler to keep the lines straight.

I really enjoyed creating this page and I hope you like it too.
