Art Journal Play

20180331_205138 (2)

Playing in my Dina Wakley art journal this afternoon, using up some of my stash!  Inspired by @southerngals_designs on Instagram.  Started with collage of tissue paper, book pages and gelli prints.  Added some of my new Dina Wakley paints, stenciling and doodling and this was the result.

This is what the collage looked like before the paint and play:

Happy Butterflies – Magenta DT Post

Sharing a simple art journal page today. Still hopeful Spring will arrive soon, even though I still have 2 feet of snow in my yard!

Happy Butterflies (3)

I created my background by dripping alcohol inks onto a 5″ x 7″ piece of Yupo paper, then manipulated them with blending solution. Once dry, I applied silver embossing paste through the “Flying Butterflies” stencil. I stamped the “So Many Reasons…” sentiment onto a separate piece of cardstock and cut it into sections and taped it to the page. I then taped my page into my journal.

Dreams of Spring – Magenta DT Post

I definitely have Spring fever! I am so over winter.

Alcohol Technique 2

I want to share with you how I created these colorful flowers for my journal pages, using Dylusions acrylic paints and rubbing alcohol.

First, gesso mixed media paper. When dry, spritz the page with water. On a palette, add water to Lemon Zest paint, so it is rather thin and spread over the page. Load a pipette with alcohol and drip in spots on the page. Dry thoroughly, then apply a thin coat of matte medium.

Step 1

Once dry, add another layer of water thinned paint in Peony Blush, add drips of alcohol as before.

Step 3

Apply a coat of matte medium and add a third color of paint in Periwinkle Blue. Continue to follow the previous steps, to add 2 more layers of color in Lemon Zest and Peony Blush, finish with a coat of matte medium. When thoroughly dry, stamp Poppies several times on the page with Jet Black Archival ink, then fussy cut the flowers and leaves. Don’t be concerned if the image doesn’t stamp perfectly, as the lines can be darkened later with a permanent black marker.

Step 4

Paint the background of your journal page with Peony Blush, using a foam applicator. Add splatters with white paint. Stamp the I Dream.. sentiment with Deep Purple Archival ink. Stamp the Poppies in three places on the page, altering the height each time. Darken stems as needed with a permanent black marker, extending them off the page, if necessary. Glue your fussy cut flowers and leaves to the page.

Step 7

Choose to Shine

Play date with a friend recently, helping me find my sunshine on a grey, rainy day.  Used gelli prints to collage, Dylusions paints, stamps, stencils, Distress crayons, paint pens, you name it!  Done in my hand sewn junk journal made from flyers, mail and envelopes.  Love all the different size pages.

Tender Memories – Magenta DT Post

This journal page is a tribute to my mother’s striking beauty and incredible fortitude, who passed away recently at age 96.

Mom

I started the page by collaging torn hymnal pages onto the page with matte medium. After drying, I applied a thin coat of white gesso to the entire page. Next, I used crackle texture paste through the Laces Texture stencil. I layered Dina Wakely Media acrylic paints in Turquoise, Ocean and Lapis over the textured area, spraying each layer with water and allowing it to flow around the page by tipping the journal. With a flat brush I added Inka Gold to the raised areas. I made splatters on the page with Turquoise and Gilt paint. I used Aquamarine Archival Ink and the Love Letter stamp in multiple areas on the page, and the Vine stamp several times in the area where the photo would be applied. I also stamped the sentiment, masking a portion of it, before inking the stamp. I attached gold mica flakes with white glue. I stamped Weathered Wood with Sepia Archival Ink around the edge of the page and the photo and also shaded both with the same ink and a blending foam. Finally, I backed the photo with gold cardstock and attached it to the page.

My Little Chickadee – Magenta DT Post

Our constant backyard companion, with his cheerful call, has been letting me know it’s almost time to put the winter feeders out.

Chickadee

This is a 4″ x 6″ journal page on watercolor paper.  I used Distress Oxide Inks in Fossilized Amber and Spiced Marmalade to color the background, spritzed it with water and dabbed off the excess water with a paper towel. I stamped the Bird on Branch with black Archival Ink. I applied Candied Apple Distress Oxide Ink to the Vine stamp and stamped in several areas. I stamped the Bird on Branch a second time onto another piece of watercolor paper, fussy cut the bird portion, and glued it to the page.  I used Prismacolor watercolor pencils to color the branch and bird and highlighted with black and white pens. I added a shadow line around the bird with a Stabilo All pencil and waterbrush. Finally, I edged the page with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink.
