But First Coffee

But First Coffee. Inspired by the quote on my sweetener packet this morning. You never know where inspiration will come from! First I sketched my girl in pencil, then collaged the coffee cup image with matte medium, covering the entire page to seal it. I used Faber Castell Pitt pens to color and shade and a black Posca pen to outline and highlight.

Blessed

Nothing like a painty fun filled play date with friends to warm up a cold winter day.

What Lies Beneath

Looking inside to expose the shadows, doubts and fears to bring them to the light and find peace and forgiveness. I had painted this face some months ago with watercolor markers but hated how the hair came out. I almost threw her out but stuck it in the back of my journal until I came across her the other day. I decided to cut off her hair and then the idea came to tuck her behind the burlap page I painted. I cut open the burlap and tucked it back and sewed it open. It fits my reflective mood and my word for the year of “Freedom”.

Early Morning Sketch

sweetheart

I’ve forgotten how good it feels to sketch early in the morning while it’s still dark out and the house is so still. Used water soluble graphite and brown stabilo. Glued on pieces of some vintage music sheet I’ve been hoarding.  She makes me smile.

Just Because

Whimsical face just because it was fun to do and it’s cold and sleety outside! Started with a napkin collage on kraft page in my large Dina Wakley Media journal. Then scraped on my new favorite paint – Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold by Golden.  Add some black and red Stabilo All pencil, white charcoal pencil and here she is.

The nights are turning cooler and autumn is in the air. I created these art journal pages with the beginning of fall on my mind which always brings a song to my heart.

Magenta 9-25

I started by crumpling up old hymnal pages, ran a sepia ink pad across to accentuate the wrinkles, then glued them to my journal pages. I coated the pages with clear gesso. I sponged yellow, red and pomegranate acrylic paints in different areas through the Large Foliage stencil, rotating it in different directions to cover the pages. I stamped the Large and Small Daisy stamps several times onto deli paper and colored them with yellow and carmine red colored pencils. I fussy cut them and collaged them to the page with matte medium. I used a green india ink marker to outline them and add a border to the pages. I sponged olive acrylic paint through the Alpha stencil to create the word. I used black and white pens to outline the flowers and word and to create a border around the pages. Finally, I rubbed sepia and plum ink pads around the edges of the pages to highlight the wrinkles.

I have created an art journal spread that, to me, is reminiscent of pages in a vintage botanical encyclopedia.

Magenta 9-18

I started by collaging pieces of vintage papers and book text coating them with clear gesso. Then colored the entire spread with Distress Inks. Next I sponged Distress Inks through the Leafy Tree and the Large Foliage stencils. I added some outlines with pen and more color to the Leafy Tree with paint pens. I splattered Distress Stain on the pages. Then I stamped the Life is Beautiful sentiment in several places on the spread, but heat embossed the one near the base of the tree so it would be more prominent.

Some intuitive collage, painting and stamping today, as I really did not know where I was going with this art journal page when I started.

Magenta 9-11-18

I collaged some previously painted and crumpled deli paper onto an 8″ x 5 1/4″ piece of watercolor paper with matte medium, then covered it with clear gesso. I used chalk paint through the Field of Flowers and Feathers stencils to add more visual texture. I stamped and heat embossed the Sparrow Sketch and Large Feather, then painted all around the images, excluding the background. I used a white pen through the Raindrops stencil then painted each raindrop individually. I then stamped and heat embossed the Kindness sentiment and finally, I inked around the edges of the page.
