Tonight’s sketch in pencil and charcoal. Love the way graphite and charcoal smudge with a blending stump.

Sunshine On My Mind

It was good to see some sunshine today, it’s been so gray and dreary lately. Just a quick sketch tonight with pencil, pen and watercolors. Oh, and of course splatters!

What Lies Beneath

Looking inside to expose the shadows, doubts and fears to bring them to the light and find peace and forgiveness. I had painted this face some months ago with watercolor markers but hated how the hair came out. I almost threw her out but stuck it in the back of my journal until I came across her the other day. I decided to cut off her hair and then the idea came to tuck her behind the burlap page I painted. I cut open the burlap and tucked it back and sewed it open. It fits my reflective mood and my word for the year of “Freedom”.

Early Morning Sketch

sweetheart

I’ve forgotten how good it feels to sketch early in the morning while it’s still dark out and the house is so still. Used water soluble graphite and brown stabilo. Glued on pieces of some vintage music sheet I’ve been hoarding.  She makes me smile.

Just Because

Whimsical face just because it was fun to do and it’s cold and sleety outside! Started with a napkin collage on kraft page in my large Dina Wakley Media journal. Then scraped on my new favorite paint – Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold by Golden.  Add some black and red Stabilo All pencil, white charcoal pencil and here she is.

Art journal page on canvas in my large Dina Wakley Media journal. Lots of mixed media layers, drawing and collage.

Word for the Year – Freedom

20190101_173445.jpg

My word for the year always seems to come to me sometime before the previous year ends. I am hoping it’s all good, as in freedom of expression in my creativity and freedom from past regrets and the ability to move forward and so on and so on. But, I’m a little wary, as last year’s word was Change. There were a lot of changes last year. Some bad, like losing my mom early in the year. Some good, like gaining more confidence in drawing faces (100 day challenge) and losing a ton of weight. Guess I’ll have to wait and see what this year brings! Happy New Year everyone. Hope you have a great one!
